Top 50 (well 53) Websites and Apps for Researching Your Ancestry

When conducting genealogy research, seasoned historians know that the sources of the deepest and most detailed information are not usually found on the Internet.  Avid ancestry research requires a great deal of legwork, phone calls, emails, and often travelling.  Many libraries and historical archives for cities and counties don’t publish their records online.  This especially applies to information from periods prior to the early 1900s.  And often some rich information can be found from reading history books, which would require either a purchase or a visit to the library.  Sometimes a wealth of information is found by meeting with people who actually knew your ancestors or were distantly related to them, and even talking to people that are neighbors of the home they lived in.  However, there is still a great deal of information you can find on the Internet and several very useful tools for conducting your research and keeping it organized.  So in response to the many, many questions I’ve received much like, “Where is the best place to look for ancestry records?” and “Where did you find that?”, following is a list of my top 50 (with a few extra) websites and apps for genealogy research.
